Facial Hair Equates Deceptive Body Fat Results

I just read an interesting study published in May 2001 regarding the effect of air displacement in scalp and facial hair on body fat estimations. According to the results, that hair on your head and on your face can make your body fat results come in slightly less than what they actually are.

Read the PDF version of the study HERE

I have heard some people say that hair (on the head and on the face) makes a man look thinner, and I have heard others say they think it makes a man look heavier.

What do YOU think? Does facial hair make a man look thinner or heavier?

R.I.P. Santa's Beard

An interesting article about the makeover of Santa for the 21st Century. One change is shaving off some of his weight. Another suggested change is shaving off his beard.

In this article from the Telegraph, research is quoted regarding how people perceive those who sport a beard:

"Prof Wiseman discovered that beards have a huge effect on how people are seen. When compared with the clean-shaven, those sporting white beards are seen as less generous (by 28 per cent), cheerful (39 per cent) and caring (29 per cent).

"When it comes to the relationship between perceived personality and facial hair, beards matter - and the effects are mainly negative," says Prof Wiseman. Therefore, a shaven Santa "would be much better"."

The article and research brings up the following questions:

1- What do you think of a made-over Santa?
2- What do you think about the findings of the study regarding how people perceive those with facial hair?

Happy Holidays to you and yours!

Growing and Shaping a Beard

If you have ever seen reports about beard growing contests, then you are probably also familiar with the amazing shapes that have been created. They are creative, and pure art.

But what about growing a more standard beard? There is a certain amount of creativity involved in not only picking the right beard shape for your face, but compensating for any problems you come across along the way such as spots that won't grow hair.

One great source about the basics for growing and shaping a beard are here at All About Beards by Beardguy.

And, for those who have the time and ambition to tackle growing a more artistic beard, here is a link to a great source of beard-growing contest information, including some amazing photos: World Beard and Mustache Championships.

The question of the day is this:
If you were going to grow an artistic beard for a contest, what design or shape would you strive for?

Why Every Man Should Have a Hairy Face

I could post a lengthy diatribe about all the benefits to men and the women who love them, of facial hair (on a man's face). If you have followed this blog, you are already aware of a few of them.

However, I think one of the top selling points as to why a man should grow facial hair is summed up best with the following short YouTube video from dezquilici:

Is there anything more heart-warming and joyful than the sound of a child's laughter?

Aside from that reason, and the sexual ones which I know would come up; what reasons can YOU think of for a man to have facial hair?

at Engrish.com they do!

This funny picture of a notice posted in China was submitted to the site, and they in turn posted it for everyone to enjoy.

If you explore the site, you will see other examples of poorly translated items, some of which are rib-tickling funny.

If you have seen any funny signs related to men's facial hair, please submit the links or photos here and I will post them with credit to you for the submission.

Facial Hair Wigs - Let the Fun Begin

In October I did a post about the fake facial hair craze in Japan. Today I present information about a company right here in the USA that offers a wide selection of male wigs, beards, and mustaches. I do so because I find their website so entertaining.

The site itself is interesting for several reasons, the first being that they utilize a computer-generated greeter on the home page. You know those annoying ads you run across online for a talking avatar thing? It instructs you to type anything in the box and the avatar will say it? Well, International Wig uses that technology, and seeing it actually in use versus just a typed sample, is pretty impressive.

The fake hair they offer ranges from really simple and nice looking to the really bizarre. One more reason it is worth the time to peruse the site - you just won't believe some of what you will see.

Then, the piece de resistance - the cyber wig try on section which allows you to upload a picture of yourself and then 'try on' some of their wigs. I couldn't get it to work when I tried to upload a picture of myself, and it doesn't let you play with the facial hair 'wigs'. But, my system is buggy, so for you it may work. There is a male and a female face in the tool which allows you to 'try on' various wigs the company offers.

On the topic of wigs, generally, here is a clip from the Letterman Show that is just too funny not to share:

Video from Youtube user gazooblebork

The video brings up a point that needs to be made: fake hair of any type is fine if it makes the wearer feel better and look better. But some fake hair just really is best done without.

This begs the question: if you don't have facial hair, for whatever reason, and your significant other wished you did, would you get some fake facial hair to wear for them?

What are YOU Thankful for?

*AN ACROSS THE BLOGS POST

Every year on Thanksgiving Day we have a tradition in my home to share a few of the many things we are thankful for. I would like to hear what YOU are thankful for, too. Here are a few things I am thankful for on this Thanksgiving Day:

I am thankful for being able to do a job that I love. I am thankful I am living my dream.
I am thankful for being blessed with this amazing son to raise, care for, love, and learn from. He is one of the greatest blessings in my life.
I am thankful for the roof over our heads, our utilities, food in our bellies, and clothes on our backs. I am thankful I have a reliable vehicle.
I am thankful that every year my health gets a little better and I get a little stronger after being so desperately ill and immobile for so very long. I am thankful I can now walk on my own two feet – and in 4” heeled boots, no less!
I am thankful for the technology which allows me to make better use of my time and work from home so I can be with my son. I am thankful for technology being in place which allows me to work, period.
I am thankful for all those who love us, care about us, and pray for us – who are so good to me and my son.
I am thankful for my friends who are always there to help me when I need it, to set me straight when I mess up, and lift me when I fall and cannot get back up. They are amongst the greatest blessings in my life.
I am grateful for the men who have blessed my life with love, laughter, and learning. There is not one of you who have not taught me something about life, relationships, or myself. God Bless You All.
And, I am thankful for you, my readers, who give me the motivation to keep writing and to keep perfecting my craft. You challenge me to be better and to work harder. You inspire me with your words and insight. You are amazing in your own right, and I am so very grateful for the glimpses into your world, life, and heart which you have allowed me.

Here is a little Happy Thanksgiving Treat for you, from me:

Thanksgiving: Say a Prayer for Facial Hair

I found this gem of a blog post, and I had to share it. Witty, educational, and brief, it is truly delightful and fun.

Say a Prayer for Facial Hair by Zane Ecklund

So, in the spirit of praying for facial hair, how would YOUR prayer go?

Speaking of Thanksgiving and Facial Hair, ever seen a bearded turkey?

Video from YouTube user wildstar1 who includes the following in the video description, "A look at the North American wild turkey. The first group foraging are females, called hens. The second bunch of running birds are a group of males known as gobblers. You can tell the difference between the two by the "beards" on the males. A clump of long thin feathers hanging from the base of their throats."

Happy Birthday to the Electric Shaver/Razor

US Army Lieutenant Colonel Jacob Schick invented, patented, and sold the first electric shaver. The first Schick electric shaver was patented on November 6, 1928.

They say necessity is the mother of all invention, and in the case of the electric shaver it is very much true. Needing a shaver which could be used without water, Col. Schick was motivated to come up with a solution to his dilemma. In doing so, he changed forever the way men would shave. Without his inventiveness, men could not shave in the car on the way to work. *WINK*

In honor of this special birthday, here is a sexy birthday song dedicated to all the sexy men out there and their (well-groomed) facial hair.

How Fast Does YOUR Beard Grow?

According to ukhairdressers.com, the average beard grows 14 cm in a year; and in an average lifespan, a clean-shaven man will trim off nearly 3.5 kg of whisker hair.

Today I came across this video which documents, 'every waking hour over the course of 7 weeks', one man's evolution from clean-shaven to having a full beard.

November 1 - Salt Lake City - Get $100 to Shave

Market research is being done using two different two-blade razors. Participants will be paid $100 for completing the study which involves using both razors (they provide them for free), filling out questionnaires about them, and going in to the center 3 times (downtown Salt Lake City, Utah).

I assume you can shave around your facial hair, rather than have to shave it off; but if you are interested in participating, be sure to ask in advance.

My son and I both have participated in various market research studies before and they can be fun. They don't try to sell you anything: they just need to collect data. Easy money for a little bit of your time.

Sideburns: The Under Dog of Facial Hair

Today's blog post is a tribute to the underdog of facial hair: sideburns. So much attention is given to mustaches and beards, that sideburns go largely unnoticed. While part of a great beard, they also are a stand-alone facial hair type. Then again, maybe I am wrong about calling them an underdog:

"Tony Travis sings about sideburns in Paul Frees' 1959 movie The Beatniks. Song by Eddie Brandt & Paul Frees. Featured in episode 415 of Mystery Science Theater 3000."

One of the most famous (or infamous) types of sideburns is known as 'mutton chops', though personally, I like this version much better.

Picking the Right Facial Hair Style for You

Perhaps you have recently been convinced to try facial hair, or perhaps you feel your current style is lacking something. Picking the right style for your face and sense of style is an important step in growing and keeping facial hair. With so many great options available, the task can seem daunting, to say the least.

The biggest factors in making your decision may be:

1-What styles are best for your face shape and features
2-What is your personal style
3-How much time you want to put into the maintenance of your facial hair

So, without any further ado, here are some links to some great resources for determining your face shape and what styles will look best on you. The rest is up to you.

This extensive article from HairBoutique.Com explains the various men’s face shapes and has celebrity photos as illustrations of them. Hair cut advice is given, as is some facial hair style advice.

A two-page (due to adverstising) short article from HairFinder.Com has great illustrations and explanations of the most common and popular facial hair styles. Front and side views are shown.

Ezine.Com has an article which offers tips for choosing your style based upon flaws you wish to cover such as scarring and acne; and camouflaging features such as a dominant nose.

My former fiancée couldn’t decide which of several styles he wanted, so he grew a Van Dyck, then added a full beard which went up to his sideburns. From there he whittled it down to a trimmed beard, and then went back to the Van Dyck. Experimenting with the different styles helped him to pick from amongst several possibilities. He looked really great with all of them, so it was really just a matter of which he preferred and was the easiest for him personally to maintain.

If you are unsure as to which facial hair style you want to have, you can always do something similar which will allow you to grow and try out the styles you are choosing from. The input of others as you go through this process may help you decide as well.

More facial hair information, links, and a photo gallery (which you may submit YOUR pics to) are available on the Dani Greek Goddess of Men’s Facial Hair ™ Website.

What have you found to be most helpful in the facial hair style decision-making process?

Fake Facial Hair

The Dreaded "DYE IT"

Yeah, Yeah, I have once again subjected you to another of my cheesy word plays. *LAUGH* My point with this particular one is that just as many dread 'diets', there are many men around me who fuss and fret over the 'dye it' option for the gray sprouting in their facial hair.

Some even opt to shave it all off rather than face the gray or use dye. *GASP*

Now, personally, I have yet to see a man with facial hair that has a little or a lot of gray in it that is NOT downright sexy; but its your face . . . and I understand not wanting to 'go gray' before your time.

In talking to some of these gentlemen, I was informed that their experiences with facial hair dye kits has not been positive. For those with fast-growing facial hair, the dye process must be repeated every 2-3 days, and they just don't have the kind of time and patience to deal with it.

So, first, I would like to get YOUR input as to what dye or coloring products work best (easy to do and long lasting).

Secondly, I am posting some links here to a few facial hair dye products, tip, and tricks. Please give your feedback about your experiences with these, as well.

A 'dye-free' coloring tip from GeorgeCaroll.com:
"Coloring the beard...
In some cases coloring the beard may be appropriate to cover gray spots or a lighter shade to keep the color uniformed. Beard hair is very resistant to hair dye especially as it grays. Adding color without using hair dye can be done by using a eye brow pencil applied with a make-up brush. The advantage is that it can be removed with shampoo and applied only when you want to cover gray or darken the edge to accent its shape."

Grow a Beard: Its Biblical

Author A.J. Jacobs wrote about his experiment with living biblically for a year. In this video clip, he speaks about many aspects of his year, including his experience with his 'biblical beard'. His wife also contributes her feelings and input in this interview.

The only thing I would suggest if you are going to grow a beard for biblical reasons is to find a biblical allowance (loophole) for shampooing, conditioning, and combing your beard to keep it soft and sexy for your significant other.

A.J. Jacobs' book is titled "The Year of Living Biblically" and may be purchased from multiple sources.

Yes, It Really is Bigger in Texas

Well, its not facial hair, but it is certainly a men's hair story worth blogging about. Texan Wes Pemberton should soon be a member of Guinness's Book of World Records. Why, you may ask? For the world's longest LEG HAIR. But, don't take my word for it. Check THIS out.

Now, I wouldn't advocate any of you sexy gentlemen trying to beat that record; however, if you would like to try to set a record for longest face rubbin ever given to a Greek Goddess, well, you certainly have my blessing.

Soften Up, Guys!

It is no secret that I am crazy about men's facial hair and I enjoy it being lightly rubbed against my face and neck. I don't find it to be scratchy, abrasive, or rough at all. Many women complain about that, and also about getting 'raw' around their mouth from kissing a man with facial hair.

Well, admittedly if you indulge in a nice long makeout session, whether the man has facial hair or not, you can still end up a little pink and tender around your mouth area. However, I have not found men's facial hair to be the culprit: rather it all depends on the style of kissing you are indulging in. A man with scruff, which is the roughest form of all facial hair, can get in some pretty sweet kissing and not leave a woman's sensitive mouth area sore.

It's all in the technique. Practice, practice, practice.  *grin*

I also know some gentlemen who feel their facial hair is 'too rough' and say they would grow and keep it if it were softer.

Not one to pass up a good challenge, and always on the lookout for ways to convert the world to the pleasures and sexiness of men with facial hair, I present to you now a few tips on how to soften up that facial hair. (so no more excuses . . .get it growing, gents!)

1- Shampoo and Conditioner. That's right. When you are washing your hair, use a tiny amount of shampoo AND conditioner on your facial hair, too. One friend with a very sexy and purportedly ultra soft full beard (he has yet to face rub me . . .sheesh . . .what is wrong with this picture?) swears by Pert Plus. I would try whatever shampoo and conditioner you already use and see how that works after a couple of weeks. If the results are not what you hoped for, then I would experiment with other products.

2- Length. Yup, the length of your facial hair can play an important part in how soft it feels to the touch. Some hair is more coarse and will need to be a tad longer in order to feel soft. It may only take a fraction of an inch (or centimeter) to make a difference. Play around with the length to determine the look and feel you like best.

3-Grooming. The angle of the trim can affect the feel of your facial hair. Remember to keep your facial hair regularly combed, as well. Both of these issues can add to or take away from the softness of your facial hair.

How your facial hair feels against your rough manly hand may be very different from how it feels up close and personal against a woman's skin, so be sure to have a lovely lady of your choice help you find the right level of softness for your facial hair.

I'm always ready, willing, and able to help out, too.

What things have you done to make your facial hair softer or less 'irritating' to women?
